Once upon a time, long, long ago, in a land far away, St. George and the Dragon first met on the banks of a giant lake when St. George was protecting the king's daughter from her fate as the dragon's dinner. According to the legend, the dragon fell to St. George's sword and all the town lived happily ever after.

This spring, in St. George, Staten Island, you can witness a magical reenactment of this tale, but in this version, St. George and the Dragon come to peaceful compromise and learn to share and manage the water resource cooperatively.

This larger-than-life theatre is the centerpiece to the 5th Annual St. George Day Festival in Tompkinsville Park, the recently renovated green space, centrally located in St. George, vibrant, a low income, racially diverse neighborhood on Staten Island’s North Shore surrounding the ferry terminal. In addition, the free festival features live music and dance performances, earth day events (composting demonstrations, free bike repair, seed ball making, herb sales), a book faire (all day readings, a book swap, a binding demonstration) kids crafts, a DIY art gallery encircling the park, contests for all ages, craft workshops and more.

This day of spectacle, arts, education and community building is orchestrated by the volunteer-run, grassroots group Community Association of Tompkinsville Park Promoting Arts and Fun. The group needs to raise $540 for art supplies, promotional materials, port-a-potties and sound equipment for the day's event. When they reach their goal of just $540, Partnerships for Parks will match the money raised, dollar for dollar, as part of a new pilot Challenge Match from ioby and Partnerships for Parks. Support this great project with a $10 donation today.
