Application Deadline: January 31, 2011
Position Title: Digital Storytelling Fellowship
Employer: ioby (www.ioby.org)

About ioby
ioby (eye-OH-be) stands for in our backyards and the belief that environmental knowledge, action and service begin and thrive at the local level. Through our online platform based on the proven model of micro-philanthropy, we connect New Yorkers who care about environmental issues and who care about their neighborhoods to the leaders of existing under-resourced, community-based, environmental projects across the city that need small donations and volunteer support. Projects get the resources they need to make tangible environmental and social change while donors and volunteers find meaningful opportunities to support and become involved with local communities.

Description

We are currently seeking an intern with experience in videography, film production, video editing software and/or other digital media to work closely with our new Digital Storytelling program, currently in its pilot phase.

The Digital Storytelling program will provide to our project groups a toolkit that includes a Flip video camera, a basic storyboard and videography tips. Interested groups may shoot two types of videos – “please” and “thank you” – which will be lightly edited by ioby and posted on their project pages before and after the project is funded. This allows groups to tell their own story while simultaneously allowing donors and volunteers the experience of a site visit. Soon, we will be able to present these videos on ioby.org, geo-located on a searchable map of NYC alongside impact-tracking technologies. These stories help people explore and understand the urban environment, feel connected to projects working in their neighborhood, and – through ioby.org – easily get involved. This initiative represents an entirely new way of seeing and supporting urban environmentalism.

The intern position could be a part of many aspects of this program, from video production and distribution to outreach to project groups. The program is in its pilot phase and promises to be an exciting addition to our work.

In addition to supporting our Digital Storytelling program, depending on availability and scheduling, the intern may also have a range of duties, which could include any of the following, depending on his or her interests and skill set:
• Coordinating ioby participation in outreach events in NYC’s five boroughs
• Providing technical assistance and resources to NYC-based project groups
• Developing resource materials for project groups
• Writing and editing the ioby blog
• Planning online content, videos and photo development
• Researching and producing useful data on a variety of topics, including: NYC environmental problems and environmental justice statistics; measurable uses and benefits of online social networking for the environmental movement; statistics of charitable giving
• Assisting with development and implementation of strategies for corporate/business outreach, community outreach, or marketing
• Working with staff, other volunteers, and interns on a variety of other tasks

Qualifications: We’re seeking a self-starter who will work independently and see projects through to completion with a minimal amount of oversight. In addition to particular skills that would contribute to our Digital Storytelling Program, a focus on or interest in environmental science/policy, community development, environmental justice, urban planning, or related fields, is preferred but not mandatory. Knowledge of New York City’s neighborhoods is desirable, but not required.

Details: This internship is unpaid. We are happy to work with interns to coordinate credit and/or stipends from their school or college. Hours and start/end dates are both highly flexible. Office space will be provided.

To Apply: Email your resume and a short cover letter describing what you think you will bring to ioby, your interest in our Digital Storytelling program, your academic focus and/or goals, and what you wish to get out of an internship to Brandon Whitney (bwhitney@ioby.org). Please use “Digital Storytelling Internship Application” as the subject line.

Women, people of color and LGBT people are strongly encouraged to apply.
