Application Deadline: January 11, 2011
Position Title: Neighborhood Outreach & Project Support Manager
Employer: ioby (www.ioby.org)
Description:
ioby (eye-OH-be) stands for in our backyards and the belief that environmental knowledge, action and service begin and thrive at the local level. Through our online platform based on the proven model of micro-philanthropy, we connect New Yorkers who care about environmental issues and who care about their neighborhoods to the leaders of existing under-resourced, community-based, environmental projects across the city that need small donations and volunteer support. Projects get the resources they need to make tangible environmental and social change while donors and volunteers find meaningful opportunities to support and become involved with local communities.
Founded in 2008, ioby is a young, dynamic startup and the only online micro-philanthropic initiative that encourages local civic environmental action among neighbors. Our team is expanding and we're looking for a talented, motivated individual to lead our efforts in project outreach, support and capacity building for our New York City pilot.
Key Objectives for Position:
1. Dramatically increase ioby’s base of projects
2. Improve the quality of relationships between ioby and projects using our platform, online and offline
3. Grow ioby’s geographic reach/visibility in NYC and ability to serve underserved communities
4. Build ioby’s capacity to provide grassroots fundraising training to projects
Responsibilities:
• Develop and implement an outreach and project support plan for 2011 with executive staff
• Identify, build and manage relationships with potential external partner organizations for outreach, technical assistance, community organizing and grassroots fundraising
• Act as a central point of contact for all communications relating to the projects, providing a high level of client service from start to finish: from project application solicitation and approval to funds disbursement and reporting
• Provide project-planning assistance to applicants, including scope and planning issues, budgeting and purchasing choices, connections and introductions to other resources and services, and training on how to best use our tools
• Assist in development of metrics to measure social outcomes and environmental impacts of past and present projects
• Attend outreach events related to environmental action in NYC’s five boroughs and metro area as a way of soliciting new projects
• Organize and lead workshops on grassroots fundraising organizing with key partner organizations
• Be an awesome advocate and supporter of the organization and a team player on a staff of three
Qualifications:
Candidates for this position must have the following characteristics.
• Demonstrated contextual knowledge of environmental work and community development, and a working knowledge of New York City neighborhoods and their socio-economic-environmental landscape
• 3-6 years of professional experience in a related field, such as urban ecology and/or community organizing
• Bachelors degree or equivalent in a related field
• Highly organized, self-starting, excellent problem-solving skills, motivated creativity, and the ability to manage many things at once while being flexible and able to think on the go
• Comfortable (even thrive) working a non-traditional workweek—this position requires working evenings and weekends regularly (don’t worry your workweek will be structured accordingly)
• Outgoing, gregarious, articulate; comfortable meeting new people regularly, speaking to groups, remembering names and faces; super communication and presentation skills
• Strong interpersonal skills: courtesy, tact, patience and team orientation; team player with a sense of humor and a life outside of work
• Ability to lift at least 20 lbs. as the job sometimes requires carrying materials and set up/break down for events
• Valid Drivers License
• Commitment to and enthusiasm for ioby’s vision, mission, values—you will be the organization’s direct connection to hundreds of grassroots groups making NYC a better place
The ideal candidate will have the following characteristics.
• An advanced degree in a related field
• Fluency or proficiency in Spanish, Chinese and/or another major language spoken in NYC
• Interest in playing a key role in building a startup organization; enjoys new challenges and opportunities
• Meticulous by nature with a passion for detail; enjoys working as efficiently as possible and improving processes; excited by Google spreadsheets
• Regularly reads: the news, Wired, The Stanford Social Innovation Review, The Atlantic, The Chronicle of Philanthropy, New York Magazine, Grist
• Enthusiastic participant in social media with a working knowledge of web trends; you blog; you tweet; you use Facebook; you post videos on YouTube or Vimeo for fun
Compensation:
This full-time position is salaried, commensurate with experience, and includes paid vacation, health benefits, transit and partial cell phone. The position will be based in Manhattan.
