Compost Bin Build

the project

We hope to continue to build on our existing garden to create a welcoming green space and educational teaching zone with native plants, flowers and herb garden that are community tended to and open to everyone.

A key element of our mission is to maximize our impact on the neighborhood by educating our local community and schools on the importance of sustainable gardening elements such as rainwater harvesting, compost systems and phytoremediation to clean pollutants and heavy metals out of native soil.

the steps

  1. Build more planter beds including educational beds for students
  2. Purchase and collect seeds to start new plants
  3. Purchase educational teaching supplies
  4. Create a community seating/teaching area
  5. Build Water Harvester System
  6. Build Compost system
  7. Tend to and plant in all street trees in 2 block radius
  8. Plant trees and bushes
  9. Develop a demonstration garden to remediate existing soil
  10. Hire teachers for monthly garden workshop classes
  11. Create and build living vertical wall to maximise sunlight

why we're doing it

To Provide additional open community greenspace on an otherwise empty lot that provides the surrounding neighborhood and local organizations with a meeting place and outdoor “classroom” for schools and youth organizations to do skill sharing workshops.

We will also, demonstrate ways local residents can take part in cleaning native soil through phytoremediation and other sustainable urban practices.

Compost Bin Build

This past Sunday June 14th, 2015 we built a new 3 bin compost system for our garden!  We're still working on getting the lids installed and a few more touches, but check out the progress thus far below!

2014 in the Garden

Last year was a great opportunity for growth in the garden. Not only did we have flourishing annuals and perennials - including some really wild tomato plants - but we had new construction like a rainwater harvest system and vertical gardens. We also successfully brought in children's classes, held workshops, and had some great events.

We'll be back soon to update more on how the funds have been spent. Thank you so much for your support!
