the project

The Friends of 4 Parks Alliance, a dedicated volunteer-run community organization nestled in the heart of the South Bronx, is on a mission to preserve, enhance, and maintain the green spaces that form the backbone of our vibrant neighborhood. With a humble request for $6,000, we aim to fortify our efforts in caring for cherished parks including Macombs Dam Park, Franz Sigel Park, Wendell Foster Park, and Joyce Kilmer Park. These green oases not only offer solace and recreation but serve as crucial gathering spots for our diverse community.

Our calendar brims with engaging activities tailored to foster a sense of pride and ownership in our parks. From the annual park cleanups and tree mulching initiatives to the joyous community socials, our events draw in over 500 participants each time. Among our flagship happenings are the adrenaline-pumping 5k run, and the spine-tingling Halloween Extravaganza, all of which unite neighbors in shared experiences of fun and camaraderie.

As a volunteer-driven endeavor, we rely wholeheartedly on the generosity of supporters like you to cover essential event costs and sustain our organizational operations. With your gracious contribution, we can ensure the seamless continuation of our annual events, fostering civic engagement, promoting volunteerism, preserving our environment, and forging invaluable connections between local vendors, businesses, nonprofits, and our cherished community members. Together, we can nurture our parks as not just spaces of greenery, but as thriving hubs of togetherness and vitality in the South Bronx.

the steps

Once we secure the necessary funding, our team will swiftly embark on a series of coordinated actions to ensure the success of our events from May to October:

  1. Convene Volunteer Leads (April - October): We'll assemble a team of dedicated community members to serve as volunteer leads, empowering them to take charge of various aspects of our programming. These leads will play pivotal roles in organizing and executing our events with precision and enthusiasm.

  2. Outreach to Local Partners (March - October): With the community's support behind us, we'll reach out to local businesses, nonprofits, and partners across the South Bronx, inviting them to sponsor and collaborate on our diverse array of events throughout the year. Building strong partnerships will enhance the impact and reach of our initiatives.

  3. Volunteer Recruitment Strategy (April - October): We'll implement a robust volunteer recruitment strategy, engaging both current and past volunteers through targeted outreach efforts. Hosting orientation sessions for upcoming events will ensure that volunteers are well-prepared and motivated to contribute meaningfully to our endeavors.

  4. Board of Directors Meeting (April, August): Our board of directors will convene to oversee in-house logistics for our events. This includes coordinating supplies, organizing storage facilities, and spearheading marketing efforts to raise awareness and participation in our upcoming activities. By leveraging the expertise and commitment of our board members, we'll streamline operations and maximize the impact of our events.

With these strategic actions in place, we are poised to make a tangible difference in our community, fostering a culture of engagement, stewardship, and joy in our beloved parks throughout the South Bronx.

why we're doing it

Our project with the Friends of 4 Parks Alliance isn't just about maintaining green spaces; it's about addressing pressing social, economic, and environmental challenges in our neighborhood. In the South Bronx, access to well-maintained parks isn't just a luxury; it's a necessity for the health and well-being of our community. However, limited resources and neglect have left many of our local parks in disrepair, depriving residents of safe and enjoyable outdoor spaces.

With the support of the requested $6,000, we're tackling these issues head-on. By preserving, enhancing, and maintaining parks like Macombs Dam Park, Franz Sigel Park, Foster Park, and Joyce Kilmer, we're not only beautifying our surroundings but also revitalizing our community. Our annual events, including park cleanups, tree mulching, and social gatherings, serve as rallying points for civic engagement and volunteerism, bringing together over 100-500+ participants each time. These events not only foster a sense of pride and ownership in our parks but also promote environmental preservation and stewardship.

Moreover, our project has broader economic implications for our neighborhood. By partnering with local businesses, nonprofits, and vendors, we're injecting resources back into our community, supporting economic growth and vitality. This funding isn't just about covering overhead costs; it's an investment in the social fabric of our neighborhood, creating opportunities for collaboration, connection, and empowerment. Our team is driven by a deep-seated passion for our community and a shared vision of a brighter, more sustainable future for all residents of the South Bronx. Together, we're not just maintaining parks; we're building a stronger, healthier, and more vibrant community for generations to come.
