Cathy started her career in 1982 as Project Manager for the Brewton, AL Main Street Program, working for the Brewton Development Authority. She later became State Program Director for the Alabama Main Street Program, working with nine small cities across the state. She moved to Memphis in 1987 to work for the Memphis Landmarks Commission at the City's Division of Housing and Community Development (HCD). She worked for passage of a new historic zoning ordinance, creation of new historic districts and reviewed applications for renovation and new construction in the Midtown Redevelopment area. She moved on to become HCD's Manager of Planning and Development and oversaw submission of federal and state grant applications and reports (CDBG, HOME, lead hazard and more).

In 1998 she left HCD and with Lydia Spencer established Pastimes Press, publisher of Old Shelby County Magazine and other history and preservation publications. The 60 issues of OSC published are available here. For the next few years while writing grants as a consultant, Cathy worked part-time at Wolf River Conservancy. In 2012 she had the opportunity to work at Le Bonheur Community Health and Well-Being. In this position she supported the division through program and grant development.
