New York
ioby was founded in Brooklyn, New York over fifteen years ago as a tool to address the climate crisis. Top down solutions were not meeting the urgent needs of neighbors, who felt compelled to take action for a more sustainable planet. From there, ioby bloomed to support a vast array of social impact projects that focused on racial equity, queer liberation, immigrant justice, and so much more. Given our Brooklyn roots, New York remains one of the primary hubs of ioby’s work. We’ve done focused work in Brownsville, Brooklyn, as well as in communities upstate. Since 2008, leaders have raised almost $9M (and counting!) on ioby across the state. This includes incredible projects like…
- Blackspace, which started off as a fiscally sponsored project of ioby, has since become a thriving collective of Black residents, changemakers, systems thinkers, learners, and lovers.
- South Brooklyn Mutual Aid emerged during the coronavirus pandemic and raised almost half a million dollars on ioby for food and personal protective equipment.
- STooPS Bed Stuy hosts the annual Bed Stuy Art Crawl, bringing together neighbors, block associations, community gardens, and local community boards.
- The Refugee Translation Project, a Brooklyn-based non-profit dedicated to helping refugees transition to a life of safety and security by providing free translation services to people seeking asylum and other immigration relief, increasing access to vital resources, and offering employment opportunities to refugees.
- The Con Edison Power Up Neighborhood Match Program matches donations up to $500 per donor, and up to $3,000 total for eligible projects in New York City and Westchester County.
