the project

For the past 14 years, we have committed ourselves to meeting the needs of the homeless by holding a community celebration event every November called ALIVE. This event brings together the homeless as they celebrate life, listen to live music, play games, receive an abundance of warm winter clothes and prizes, as well as enjoy a delicious hot meal. Over the years, we have seen this event increase in popularity as many of the homeless are shown dignity and respect, simply by being treated like ‘normal’ people. It is also a great opportunity for homeless families to enjoy time together without worrying about the public’s opinion of them. Last year’s event we saw over 400 people come out and enjoy the day. With the economy in the state that it is in, we have seen more homeless on the streets and expect around 700 people in 2016.

the steps

ALIVE is a collaborative event with many parts. There will be over 350 volunteers, and partnerships with over 13 local organizations. Over the course of three months, these groups will collect, sort, and distribute clothing, request, gather, cook, and serve food, organize games and crafts, and organize Pittsburgh's largest outdoor celebration for the homeless. Being the 14th year, we are very experienced at organizing this event and utilizing volunteers as leaders to accomplish this great undertaking.

why we're doing it

More than anything, the homeless need hope, and ALIVE is a day of hope for the homeless. While we enjoy passing out clothes and connecting people to community resources, the most important part of ALIVE is sharing life together. It is a day for the homeless to play 'hooky' from being homeless. On this day, they can just be 'normal'; not labeled by their current situation, but rather embraced for being beautifully and wonderfully created. When you feel alive, you begin to act like such, and that is where we have seen so much turn around in the lives of our friends.
