the project

The Allegheny Commons Community Garden will transform an abandoned and dilapidated space into a useful and attractive plot. This area will provide accessible gardening opportunities to socially and economically diverse Northside, North Shore and other City of Pittsburgh residents, businesses and organizational contributors, while returning a chronically underused parcel to an appealing and active use.

the steps

  • Adapt, re-use, and improve abandoned and deteriorating tennis courts
  • Build 24” to 30” high durable raised gardening beds on top of existing asphalt to promote use by gardeners with varied abilities and mobility
  • Engage gardeners, volunteers and governance members from the   diverse surrounding communities
  • Strengthen community relationships across physical & social barriers
  • Promote the health and well-being of participants
  • Encourage reciprocal economic connections with nearby businesses
  • Improve the gateway to Allegheny Commons Park, Deutschtown and  the Northside
  • Discourage criminal and nuisance activities by reactivating an area in   current decline
  • Provide space to host appropriate social, educational and cultural events

why we're doing it

We are building the Allegheny Commons Community Garden to encourage new relationships and exchanges among people, support healthy lifestyles through gardening and develop a distinctive community asset.

Your contribution is valued and will help us to:

  • Return a derelict space to active use
  • Beautify and improve gateways to Allegheny Commons Park/Northside/Deutschtown
  • Improve relations between diverse communities/neighborhoods
  • Provide opportunities for business district engagement
  • Build partnerships with community organizations and establish educational opportunities
  • Promote stewardship and community involvement with local youth

Every dollar raised through IOBY will go toward the renovation, revitalization, and conversion of the abandoned Allegheny Commons tennis court into a beautiful community garden.

  • Contributions will help fund…
    • Refurbishing the cracked and unattractive tennis court surface
    • Construction of over 20 raised planter beds made of quality material
    • A pergola to create a shaded seating area
    • Gardening tools and storage
    • Potting soil for raised beds
    • Improvements to the existing fence around the property
