Summer is, ultimately, too short. Summer in the City volunteers and Campers spend the sunny summer days making myriad memories citywide. And then, in the blink of an eye, it's time to head back to school.
We hope everyone concludes camp and commences school with the confidence, compassion, and courage to be the change they wish to see in Detroit.
And with backpacks! Backpacks are our humble way to send 1,200 Campers back to school with a few tools (and long-lasting high fives) that will help them as they travel through their school year into next summer and back with us.
1. Get our volunteers and Campers excited for the big finale finish of the 17th Summer in the city happening, of course, on August 17th.
2. Source donated and discounted school supplies.
3. Raise money from our benevloent and big-hearted friends and family for our beautiful back-to-school backpacks.
3. Celebrate the end of the summer on the most fantastic day of all: Finale Friday! Campers will get to do their own back-to-school shopping to fill their boutiful backbacks at activity stations throughout the Ernest T. Ford Recreation Center.
Summer in the City works to create safe spaces for campers and volunteers to grow together for eight wonderful weeks and then share their anticipation and anxiety about heading back to school.
Now that we have campers who have been with us for many summers -- and some who have returned as volunteers -- we know that this small investment can be a major vote of confidence in their academic careers.
