the project

A quarterly wellness workshop centered around Black  women, specifically mothers and their children. Each quarter we will introduce participants to new low cost ways to workout, fresh food markets, recipes in a fun day party setting.  Each event will feature local businesses and will be fashioned after the popular day parties that have taken over the last few summers.

the steps

There are several steps that need to be taken in order to make Baobab Fit a success. We will need to:

Booking trainers that specialize in training women (i.e Zumba, HITT, Socacize instructors)

Book a DJ to give the event the feel of a day party.

Obtaining and renting a space.

Working with community gardens and restaurants to provide snacks and also education (benefits of juicing, vegetarian life).

Marketing. There are several organizations in Brownsville that focus on growth in Brownsville.

why we're doing it

As a Brownsville native, I have been blessed with so many opportunites in the fitness and dance world and have been looking for a way to bring that home.  Across Brooklyn gyms and yoga centers are popping up everywhere, but areas that are mostly Black and Latino are being left behind. There is less of a push for wellness spaces in our communities and I want to change that.  There are even fewer spaces that center mothers of color, giving them the space they need to regroup so that they can continue to be be givers. Baobab Fit is way of allowing Mothers to be takers, even if just once a month.

budget

Disbursement budget (as of 10.11.16):

1) Payment of the trainers ($59) reiki master / mental health advisors($100)

2) compensations for local restaurants that agree to provide snacks for

participants - two restaurants have volunteered their services

3) purchase of gift bags for sponsor gifts -$30

4) Space rental (at current moment the rates I’ve received are 4hrs for

$450)

5) marketing -$150

6) Chef tutorial -$200

This leaves a balance which will cover the December event.

RAISED = $1,882.00
less ioby Platform Fee  $35.00

Updated budget (as of 9.28.16):

Some of our anticipated costs may be less than we originally expected so we're reducing our goal to $2500. Help us get there! But the more we raise the more we'll be able to do for Baobab Fit-Brownsville!

SUBTOTAL = 2,500
ioby Platform Fee  $35
ioby Fiscal Sponsorship Fee (5%) $125
ioby Donation Processing Fee (3%) $75
TOTAL TO RAISE = $2,735

This number will cover the following:

1) Payment of the trainers, reiki master / mental health advisors

2) compensations for local restaurants that agree to provide snacks for participants

3) purchase of gift bags for sponsor gifts

baobab fit

“I want to take the good developments happening in the rest of Brooklyn and bring them to Brownsville, which has been largely left behind,” says Krishna Davenport of her Healthy Neighborhoods Challenge project  Baobab Fit – Brownsville. Her idea was inspired by the recent “daytime parties” trend, but adds a particular focus on wellness for moms of color in this Brooklyn neighborhood—moms who otherwise might not have ready access to such events. (The project also takes inspiration from the venerable Baobab tree, also known as “The Tree of Life”—a species native to Africa that produces nutrient-dense fruit, provides shelter for people and animals, and can live for thousands of years.) ...

We're Well On Our Way

Thank you to everyone that has donated to our awesome project so far! We are working hard to secure the right space, the best trainers so we can provide a full, fun experience for the Moms of Brownsville.

I am excited to share this great news with you about the Baobab Fit project!

We've connected with a venue and two local restaurants about supporting our venture.

And received an inkind donation from the people at Paleo Kitchen for gift bags!

There's a lot more to come, so stay tuned!
