the project

Bob Deskins Outdoor Learning Garden will be established on the corner of 93rd and Harvard Avenue of Cleveland, Ohio’s southeast side.  The primary goal of this garden is to serve the immediate residents, schools, and local organizations within Union Miles community.  The Bob Deskins Outdoor Learning Garden will also provide:

  • safe outdoor gathering space equipped with lighting for group use
  • beauty and creative re-use of vacant land in the community
  • education for school aged youth who will learn about horticulture and urban farming
  • youth play area
  • sustainable edible gardens; by the community, for the community

the steps

The Bob Deskins Outdoor Learning Garden will take 3 phases of installation to complete.

Phase 1:

  • The groundbreaking – where the layout of the garden will be installed
  • Walkway Installation of permeable pavers
  • The construction of the pergola

Phase 2:

  • Installation of solar powered lighting
  • Planting of edible gardens and trees

Phase 3:

  • The construction of the youth playground area created with recycled materials
  • The construction of the student learning center where students from Miles Park can enjoy learning outdoors

why we're doing it

Community residents described their need for a location for safe community outdoor events equipped with adequate seating and lighting.  The garden will not cause any effect to the flow of traffic along the corner of 93rd and Harvard Ave.  This vacant land that measures approximately one acre will serve as a beautification site for a community.  The Learning Garden will have the comfort of raised seating, a covered pergola with gutters to capture rain water, and permeable pavers lining the walkway.  Residents and students of the Union Miles Agriculture and Green Landscaping Incubator will be expected to assist and share the responsibility of maintaining the garden.

The impact that we expect for the Bob Deskins Outdoor Learning Garden to have on the Union Miles neighborhood will be a positive effect.  Residents who will be most affected by this revitalization will enjoy the addition of solar-powered lighting that will not only be innovative by conserving energy but will aid in crime prevention.  The use of permeable pavers for the walkways will also help to preserve the environment, and direct rain water to the growing gardens located within the Outdoor Learning Garden.
