the project
The Bronx Salad will increase the healthy food options in the South Bronx and create opportunities for residents to create healthier, more vibrant neighborhoods.
The Bronx Salad is a collaboration between the South Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation (SoBRO), United Business Cooperative (UBC), and the Institute for Family Health's Bronx Health REACH Coalition. The salad will launch in South Bronx restaurants and eventually be available throughout the borough at participating restaurants, bodegas and schools.
The recipe was created by acclaimed Chef King Phojonakong - the culinary genius behind the delicious Bronx Greenmarket Hot Sauce - and includes simple, fresh ingredients that represent the culinary diversity of the borough. The majority of the salad’s ingredients will be grown in SoBRO’s youth-led hydroponic roof garden and the remaining ingredients will be sourced from community gardens in The Bronx.
ALL DONATIONS MADE BEFORE OCTOBER 7TH WILL BE MATCHED BY THE NEW YORK STATE HEALTH FOUNDATION!
the steps
To launch The Bronx Salad, we need to raise funds to purchase the ingredients from local community gardens. All of the ingredients will be used in the salad.
why we're doing it
The Bronx Salad project is a direct response to the Bronx’s recent ranking in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin’s County Health Ranking & Roadmaps Report. Each year, the report measures important aspects of a county’s health and the critical role that non-health related factors like education, employment, income and the environment play in how healthy we are and how long we will live. Last year the Bronx was ranked 62 or the LEAST healthy county of all 62 counties in New York State.
The Bronx Salad will contribute to a community culture of health and allow the Bronx to be a “self-healing community.” Many Bronx residents are not aware of the affect their diets have on their health. By working with community gardens and local restaurant owners, we aim to improve the health of those Bronx residents suffering from obesity, heart disease and diabetes by providing healthier food in their neighborhoods. The project will also strengthen the financial situation of local restaurant owners and make healthy restaurants and healthy communities a reality in The Bronx. The Bronx Salad is a major step forward in “#Not62 – The Campaign for a Healthy Bronx”.
If you donate your name will be listed on signage at those restaurants participating in the Healthy Restaurant Initiative acknowledging your support for the Bronx Salad.
