A big BUGS thank you!

the project

December 29th update: Thanks to everyone's incredible generosity on this site and through offline donations (checks) we were able to access the full $10,000 match by December 23rd!  We therefore have only $1,060 left to reach our $30,000 goal for the new year!  We are almost there. Thanks for spreading the word and chiseling away at that $1,060.  We are doing this together!

Brooklyn Urban Garden Charter School (BUGS) relies on private contributions and support from generous individuals like you to create an environment where middle school students can flourish academically and personally.

Reanna, an 8th grader at BUGS, found her strength and power through the school’s welcoming, academically-challenging environment:

“I love how the school is small and teachers care, know me by name, and connect.  It’s warming.  I can give my opinion and others are open to talk and try to understand.  It’s an "aware" school.

BUGS has given me the power to conquer and to control my anxiety.  Something I never thought I would have been able to achieve.  My story no longer controls me. I control my story. I am full of love and happiness and want to give everyone a chance to feel their own self-love and happiness, like I have found through BUGS and the meditation program.”

This time of the year is pivotal to be able to continue to provide this innovative work in this diverse academically-challenging, sustainability-themed school.  We hope you will consider supporting BUGS with a gift by December 23!

why we're doing it

Now more than ever, we need our students to create a caring school community, to make their mark of justice through civic engagement, and work to ensure our environmental, economic, and social sustainability in the immediate and long-term future.

Supporting BUGS is a way for you to make sure that diversity, sustainability and equal access to a high quality education continue to be a focus in the year of political transition ahead.

By donating, you make a mark locally on students' lives, like Reanna's, and make a mark nationally by supporting an innovative educational model and beacon of educational innovation and hope.

Help all BUGS kids discover their best self at a critical time!

At the Brooklyn Urban Garden Charter School (BUGS), we specialize in children’s academic and social development in the middle years and seize the power of this stage of development. We help middle schoolers uncover their best selves, filled with intelligence, compassion, and purpose, by providing a small, rigorous learning community where every student is known, challenged and supported.

Now more than ever, we need our students to create a caring school community, to make their mark of justice through civic engagement, and work to ensure our environmental, economic, and social sustainability in the immediate and long-term future.

Please donate today:

$30 Provides students’ field study journals for one of our small group Advisory Classes so that students can take charge of their learning and organize themselves.

$100 Provides an update for educational “apps” on classroom technology for the year, so that students can have access to cutting-edge educational technology regardless of their financial means.

$250 Subsidizes a year of field study expenses so that they are affordable to all students, exposing them to New York City as a living classroom.

$500 Provides a teacher with classroom supplies for the year, increasing their resources and reducing their personal expenses.

$1,000 Provides a day of teacher training in such areas as sustainability education and customizing lessons for all different types of students.

Click here to donate online today through our Annual Appeal campaign.

Thank you for making a difference in Reanna’s, and all of our children’s lives by supporting our innovative educational model.

Best,

NEWs - What crowdfunding has meant for BUGS...

October 13, 2016

About four years ago, civil rights education attorney Miriam Nunberg approached Susan Tenner through mutual friends, and asked her to join a group of parents in the Park Slope, Windsor Terrace, and surrounding neighborhoods of Brooklyn, NY for a conversation about the district’s middle school application process. They were concerned. The district, everyone knew, had both a capacity problem and an equity problem. Getting your kids into a good school was terribly stressful, period. The group wanted to provide another high quality option that would be accessible to everyone, one that would be founded on the proven power of outdoor and experiential education. One whose roots would be in social, economic, and environmental sustainability.  CLICK HERE TO READ THE FULL ARTICLE...
