This project, in partnership with Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA), will place seats at 24 high-demand bus stops in Memphis neighborhoods. MATA currently has (or has plans to install) bus shelters where 50 or more people board every day. But many stops, even on main corridors, are not scheduled to get shelters and do not have seating. Moreover, the bus doesn't run that often on many routes, so passengers often have to wait 20 minutes or more. Seats would make that wait a lot more comfortable.

Most of the cost for the seats can be paid for by the federal transportation funding MATA receives, but a 'local match' of 20 percent is required and there is limited funding available for transit locally. This campaign will provide the matching dollars. 

MATA is working hard to improve their service to existing riders and make transit more attractive to other residents who might ride in the future. Colorful and comfortable bus stop seats are one small enhancement that can help in that effort. We hope these 24 seats can be the first of many that can be installed throughout the MATA system.
