the project

Our goal is to take a pulse on our community by collecting 1500+ surveys from a diverse range of demographics. We will gain valuable insight into:

  • Changes people want to see happen in the Coeur d'Alene area

  • Patterns of engagement in local organizations and groups, and why people may not be involved

  • Where people receive local news and information and if they find it adequate and factual

  • Charitable giving

  • Patterns in voter registration, vote by mail and participation in elections

  • Reasons why people in our local area may not vote

the steps

Completed steps:

1) Gathered community members to brainstorm a Civic Engagement Survey

2) Designed the survey in both paper and online form - received feedback, made changes

3) Piloted survey at a community event - received 180 responses, fine-tuned results

4) Entered data into Survey Monkey, analyzed it, presented it to a civic group

Next steps

Continue the process of gathering survey responses until we receive 1500+ through:

  • Face to face interaction at events or doorknocking

  • Outreach to organizations and community groups

  • Targeted online outreach

  • Volunteers interested in surveying people in their network

  1. Continue to input and analyze data

  2. Present and publish findings
  3. Convene with community members to establish projects and action plan based on our findings
  4. Collaborate with other community organizations on projects

why we're doing it

To organize successful projects, you first need to listen to the voices of those who live in the community. As Coeur d’Alene and Kootenai County continue to experience rapid growth, the need to engage more citizens in opportunities to participate in the community and in the electoral process increases. Civic engagement has been described as the foundation of a democratic society: it enables people to work together through collective action to address issues of public concern and promote the quality of life in their community.

Coeur d'Alene and our county have been experiencing very low voter turnout and civic engagement for years. Many organizations struggle to mobilize volunteers on community projects.  Part of the problem is that younger generations are largely uninvolved. We are dedicated to providing the tools, education, and inspiration to mobilize everyday people into the community and civic life.
