THANK YOU! 2018 results of Cleveland Community Canopy

the project

Donations to this campaign will bring locally grown trees to homes and businesses in our neighborhood and establish a permanent tool for ordering free or discounted trees for Cleveland residents. Trees will be planted in Detroit Shoreway, Slavic Village, Central-Kinsman, and Glenville neighborhoods.

Using a web tool available from Arbor Day Foundation, home and business owners will be able to map their property, choose the best tree for their location, and find the best place to plant their tree. Trees will then be shipped to your home or available for pickup at tree training workshops where residents can learn more about properly planting and caring for their trees.

This campaign covers the minimum investment of $5,000 to bring Arbor Day Foundation's Community Canopy service to Cleveland. Donations through June 24, 2018 are eligible for 1-to-1 match from the Cleveland Climate Action Fund. Moving forward, local organizations that are part of the Cleveland Tree Coalition are working to secure funding to turn this into a permanent program with the eventual goal of providing free trees to residents in Cleveland.

the steps

July 2018: Funding campaign ends

August 2018: Our project team works with Arbor Day Foundation to customize their Community Canopy website for Cleveland, connect Arbor Day with local tree growers, and engage local tree experts in planning workshops

September 2018: Community Canopy tree-ordering web tool goes live for residents

October 2018–March 2019: Trees planted! Tree workshops for residents

why we're doing it

Today, only about 19% of Cleveland is shaded by trees. Each year, we lose about 6,400 trees (1% of existing tree canopy cover) to old age, lack of proper maintenance, pests, disease, and development.

It's time to reforest our Forest City! We want to help get Cleveland to 30% tree canopy. Thirty percent tree cover will give us cleaner air and water, provide natural heating and cooling, and beautify our neighborhoods—benefits valued at $42 million per year. Privately owned land makes up the majority of land available for trees in Cleveland and brings these benefits directly to home and business owners.

Today, cities around the country are already using Arbor Day's Community Canopy program, which connects local funds to private landowners who want trees. The most common funder is utilities. This campaign will help Cleveland Tree Coalition show that our community demands trees and will help local organizations secure a permanent source of funding.

THANK YOU! 2018 results of Cleveland Community Canopy

Dear Cleveland Community Canopy IOBY campaign supporter:

Thank you for your contribution to the inaugural Cleveland Community Canopy tree program! With your partnership, last fall we shipped 125 trees to residents of Cleveland to plant in their yards. The 20-year cumulative effect of these trees are estimated to be 705,000 gallons of stormwater filtered or absorbed, 50,285 kWh saved, 1,000 lb of air pollutants removed, and $20,500 in total community benefits.

Your contribution laid the groundwork for Cleveland Community Canopy to become an ongoing program in northeast Ohio. The interactive web tool that has been customized for our region teaches residents about placing trees in their yards for maximal energy savings. Your support will allow Cleveland Tree Coalition to grow the program in 2019, with a goal to distribute 250 trees to residents and expand education, advertising, and partnerships to ensure that trees thrive. We hope this program will contribute to increased public support for urban tree canopy expansion and maintenance.

Together, we achieved the following:

Thank you again for your support of Cleveland Community Canopy.

Sincerely,

Order your free tree now!

Dear IOBY campaign donors,

The Cleveland Community Canopy website is now live! Cleveland residents can have a free tree shipped directly to their home. The web tool will guide you through species selection and placement to maximize your home energy savings.

Order your free tree through the Cleveland Community Canopy program!

Trees come courtesy of Arbor Day Foundation with financial support from you, our donors, plus Cleveland Climate Action Fund and Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District.

Please note that you need to be a Cleveland resident to place an order. If you need assistance with placing your order, or if you donated to receive more than one tree, please send me an email: salbro@holdenfg.org.

Thank you! Cleveland Tree Coalition is excited to grow this program to help Cleveland reach 30% tree canopy.

Sincerely,

Sandra Albro

NEORSD donation!

We were fortunate to receive a donation from Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) to take us up to the $5,000 needed. We've now started working with Arbor Day Foundation to pick out trees and refine the web tool for Cleveland residents! More information to come soon, but we're on track for fall planting.

In September, we'll start reaching out to IOBY campaign supporters about how to claim your tree.

THANK YOU for your support!

Cleveland Climate Action Fund match!

Thank you to all of our early donors! Donations that we received up through early April qualified us for a match from the Cleveland Climate Action Fund!

What's more, Cleveland Climate Action Fund announced a second round of funding this spring, giving us another opportunity to match donations! Support received before June 24 can qualify us for another match.
