the project

As the organizers of The Community Cup Classic™, we believe in a holistic youth development strategy and are organizing a neighborhood network of support, program and resources for all young people and their families as they journey into adulthood.

The mission of The Community Cup Classic™ is to stimulate higher levels of excitement within the community and increase engagement opportunities in all facets of a young person’s development, provide tools for caring adults to be actively engaged and raise one million dollars to establish a fund for sustainable youth development opportunities to answer the question, “What do our community’s children need?”

Through coordinated key partners within City and County Government, United Way services, family and youth focused agencies, the business community, school officials, philanthropic leaders and young people from across our community The Community Cup Classic™ is positioned to become the most innovative and philanthropic community engagement event for youth in the country.

the steps

Throughout the calendar year, communities throughout the county, compete against each other earning points for participation in a variety of youth centered activities, programs, events, opportunities and sports that promote academic success, connectivity to family and community, positive social emotional skill development and healthy lifestyles to determine which community has the highest level of community involvement and family engagement and thus a better community for its young people. The point system embedded within the event calendar braids youth development best practice with the core principles of human behavior and competition.

The event calendar culminates with the Community Cup Classic™ Finals, a one-week celebration filled with signature events and a tournament style finals’ where youth, from the eligible communities, compete in a variety of sport, academic, personal development and community events. The points earned from the calendar year are totaled and one community will be named the Community Cup Classic™ champion and receive The Community Cup Classic Cup™ and a monetary bonus to their fundraising allocation.  All dollars raised will be distributed via youth philanthropy within participating communities to support gaps in youth development, neighborhood improvements for youth and families and other barriers for a better community for youth.

why we're doing it

Studies and research data briefs, from Afterschool Alliance, demonstrate that the more caring adults are involved in a young person's life the higher probability that young person will become an adult contributing positively to the community, as it is the caring adult who must teach and model the “asset positively” for the youth.  However, for this to have sustainable impact, a community of adults must be properly informed and equipped with the tools themselves and Social Emotional Learning concepts provide the framework and tools to properly shape youth.

We want youth to be exposed to as many positive social and emotional learning experiences as they can during their development toward adulthood and feel empowered to be change agents in their own development.  We want the community to encourage their participation in programming that is positive and impactful.  Thus, we are placing a higher point value on the events and activities that promote academic, civic and parent engagement, social and emotional learning and health and wellness and placing the lowest point values at those same events at the competitive sport level.

Through the youth philanthropic grant making, we intend to highlight and reward those youth, adults and community environments who are able to positively impact the everyday lives of the youth, complement the parenting and education young people receive, and create the conditions to ensure that all young people succeed.  Our focus on these values allows youth to grow, thrive and reach their true potential.
