Composting in western Queens will bring more materials, workshops, and infrastructure for composting to Astoria, Long Island City, Jackson Heights, Sunnyside, and Woodside.
Composting in Western Queens will provide rodent and odor proof compost tumblers for some of the boroughs largest parks, community gardens, and greening groups. This project will seek to engage involved citizens to process their organic residuals using readily available hardware to create a nutrient-dense soil amendment for street trees, vegetable gardening, and flower planting.
Readily available materials will be sourced to construct compost tumblers out of reclaimed pickle barrels. The fabrication and assembly of the tumblers will take place at Socrates Sculpture Park on May 20th. This will give the public an opportunity to learn how to build these tumblers on their own. The tumblers that will be assembled will be used for public greening projects in Western Queens.
Composting is the most environmentally responsible way to manage food and yard debris. Composting locally removes the challenges related to the logistic and environmental burden of trucking. According to the Rodale Book of Composting, tumblers are the most appropriate unit for composting in an urban environment, both because of their capacity to retain odors and moisture, and their ability to deter rodents.
