In NYC, food delivery cyclists are part of our daily lives, even if we may only interact with them on a momentary basis. They are often low-income Asian and Latino immigrants - left out of the mainstream bicycle community and negatively portrayed in news media.
Working 10-12 hours shifts, food delivery cyclists experience heavy ticketing, e-bike confiscations by police, robbery and assault on the job, inadequate street design for their needs, low wages, and other poor working conditions.
Our project uses a participatory research model to work in partnership with food delivery cyclists to understand their experiences and needs, through surveys, focus groups, interviews and mapping. We also plan to partner with a filmmaker to create a documentary film!
To our knowledge, no one else is doing this kind of work. With your support, food delivery workers can better participate in how we collectively reimagine more just streets, policing, and working conditions.
Funds will be used for:
1. Outreach & participation materials
2. Surveys, interviews, focus groups, language interpretation & mapping
3. Documentary film production
The Biking Public Project (BPP) has been around since 2012 and we work with groups who have been traditionally left out of cycling discussions such as women, people of color, immigrants, and working cyclists. This work is critical to facilitating more inclusive discussions of cycling advocacy in New York City and beyond. We are all-volunteer, come join us especially if you speak Chinese or Spanish!
