It is an engineering design competition between schools in the Memphis area to get more youth and underrepresented minorities interested in science, technology, engineering, and math.
After the schools make teams, they choose a project that they would like to build for the competition. We use the money to buy supplies for the projects, and the leftover money will be given as a prize for the winning school to fund a S.T.E.M. (science, technology, engineering, and math) program at their school.
why we're doing it
73% of all scientist and engineers are white, and only 18% of scientists and engineers are female. Despite minorities ages 18-24 making up 36% of the U.S. population, they only hold 12% of undergradute engineering degrees. I believe that minorities can be just as interested in these fields, and just as capable of succeeding in these fields as anyone else. They just lack the resources and exposure neccessary to build that interest.
