the project

H.E.A.L.T.H for Youths is devoted to ensuring that young people from underserved environments are able to engage with their community in a positive, nurturing way.  Part of how we do this is through community service learning. Our community and gardening outreach program is tailored to do that. Specifically we need funds for three main purposes.

First, we need to purchase large tools such as shovels, rakes and brooms in order to work in our various community gardens.

Second, we are going to build and maintain several lending libraries for our community gardens and spaces; we need to purchase lumber and supplies to build the lending libraries.

Third, we are planning a native plant project in our gardens whereby we purchase plants native to New York City to plant in our gardens and we need funds for this project.

Finally, we need to replace the plaque that was placed at the 120th Precinct garden for our student Miles Kirkland-Thomas who passed away on September 1, 2014.  The plaque was unfortunately removed from the garden and we wish to replace it so that we can properly continue to honor Miles.

the steps

- Organize groups of young people to volunteer in designated community gardens

- Coordinate with various community groups to collaborate on projects

- Organize specific groups for community service learning

- Purchase lumber to build lending libraries

- Purchase supplies to fix and maintain currently lending libraries

- Purchase native plants for our community gardens

- Pirchase tools such as rakes and shovels so that our youth can effectively garden

- Replace the plaque for student Miles Kirkland-Thomas

why we're doing it

The project addresses both community challenges of bringing various groups together (for example youth with police officers; older people with young people) as well as sustainable community gardening. Our organization believes in a holistic approach to health for our students. This includes community service learning and ensuring that our students are involved not only in bettering themselves but bettering the communities they live in and enhancing community unity. Our project involves students working at our community gardens in New York City and collaborating with other community groups and civic groups to beautify their neighborhoods and to increase collaboration with other members of the community.

We have a new garden in the Skyline Playground in Staten Island and this is an example of a garden we will utilize to help the students grow vegetables, interact with the community and beautify the neighborhood. We will incorporate groups such as the NYPD, various youth community groups and neighborhood advocates to achieve these goals.
