Each year the Northside Homeless has committed itself to meeting the needs of the homeless by holding a community celebration event every November known as ALIVE. This event brings together the homeless as they celebrate life, listen to live music, play games, receive an abundance of warm winter clothes and prizes, as well as enjoy a delicious hot meal. Over the years, this event has increased in popularity as many of the homeless are shown dignity and respect, simply being treated like ‘normal’ people. It is also a great opportunity for homeless families to enjoy time together without worrying about the public’s opinion of them. Last year’s event we saw over 400 people come out and enjoy the day. This year, we expect around 600 people attend.
the steps
ALIVE 2018 will be held on Saturday, November 10th from 9 AM to 2 PM in Allegheny Commons Park on the Northside of Pittsburgh. For the past 3 months we have been planning the event by bringing together partners, collecting donations of food and clothing, and connecting with neighbors. Leading up to the event, we will be sorting all of the donated clothing, prepping and cooking most of the turkey pot pie, and getting the park ready for the awesome event.
why we're doing it
ALIVE has a dramatic impact on the lives of everyone it touches. From volunteers, to the homeless, everyone feels appreciated, valued and many dedicate themselves to getting back on their feet. From this event, other programs have been created that benefit the homeless such as regular street outreaches, a mobile employment center, and a crowdrising social media platform designed to assist the homeless. ALIVE is a great way to break down the barriers that separate the homeless from the rest of society. It is for this reason that we are so excited about this year’s event.
