the project

The goal of this project is to create a community space where neighbors of all ages are welcomed for activities and education. The Highland Clubhouse will offer community gathering space and targeted programming to residents of the surrounding neighborhoods. Space offerings include a commercial kitchen, laundry facilities, an exercise studeio, classrooms, and offices. Programs will include but not be limtied to mentoring, tutoring, workshops, childcare, and media production. Examples of some regular events will be movie nights, community forums, and fitness classes for all ages.

We also plan to work alongside other youth providers and community partners to maximize the impact of combined programming!

the steps

  1. Fundraise to cover costs
  2. Purchase and obtain property
  3. Environmental testing
  4. Site clean-up
  5. Construction
  6. Near completion, invite community members to help paint and decorate
  7. Furnish and complete the space
  8. Plant community garden
  9. Grand Opening community celebration!
  10. Open for the communit to offer workshops, classes, office, kitchen, laundry space and more!

why we're doing it

The Highland community has been without a community center since the one on Center Ave closed down many years ago. Teen pregnancy rates are extremely high in this neighborhood and people are frequently asking for more activities for youth. We need a welcoming space for youth and families with lots of programming and options!

budget

Disbursed Budget:

All funds raised will still go directly toward rehabilitation of the building. Architectural plans and drawings will cost approximately $9,300, and that is the first step needed so most of our funding will go towards that. Demolition and cleanup of current debris will be done mostly by Isaiah 61 volunteers, but any material costs associated with it we hope to cover. We will also use funds toward insurances needed for the property in 2020. Any remaining funds will be put toward installing windows and securing the property from the outside elements. We will be receiving a $5,000 grant in 2020 that is a challenge grant to be matched, so that plus all match funds raised will go toward remaining renovation costs.

TOTAL RAISED = $13,684.00

TOTAL TO DISBURSE= $13,238.48

Original Budget:

All funds raised will go directly toward rehabilitation of the building! There is lots to be done, as it has been abandoned for quite some time. Costs include architectural plans and drawings, demolition and cleanup of current debris, and reconstruction of accessible community spaces, including kitchen, offices, and classroom.

We will be pursuing grants and sponsorships for programming and administrative costs.

2019 Update

What a great year it's been for Highland Clubhouse! We had a news interview with Channel 2, our very first fundraising Gala, and received our 501c3 non-profit status!

Our fundraising Gala was held on November 2nd at the Niagara Falls Train Station. Sponsored by Linde and Wegman's, it was a fun evening shared with over 100 supporters, family and friends. We revealed new renderings of the Clubhouse building provided by Kelley Culp-Burton architects and gave out raffle prizes donated by many local businesses! The evening raised $4,000 which has been added here to IOBY and matched by the NY State Health Foundation.

In 2020, we are looking to increase our outreach, renovate the building, and open up to the community! Stay tuned for more exciting updates!
