We are creating an Afrofuturist museum on 7 acres that are owned by NWA Black Heritage in the center of the historic Black community that was formed in 1865 after the Civil War by formerly people enslaved in NWA cities and towns and surrounding counties. This phase of our project includes identifying the location of the "...numerous grave sites unmarked in this area" listed on the index but unmarked on the plat for the property.

Black people have been in Northwest Arkansas in large numbers for more than two hundred years and also walked the Trail of Tears as enslaved people to "the five civilized tribes".
Locating the site of unmarked burials in East Mountain Cemetery that predate emancipation at the center of the community created by descendants is an act of grounding and belonging. It will be the anchor for progress in cultural place-making that NWABH intends to achieve.
