the project

Inside Our Minds works to elevate the voices of people with lived experience of mental illness and madness in Pittsburgh. Through our community programming, we want to build a community where open conversations about mental illness and madness can take place.

Inside Our Minds is a completely volunteer-run organization - organized by people living with mental illness. To ensure the most people possible can benefit from our services, all of our events are free and open to the public. With your support, our team hopes to continue to provide our programming for free and expand our capacity as an organization - utilizing accessible venues and expanding our outreach to neighborhoods across Pittsburgh.

You can learn more about Inside Our Minds at our website, and follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

the steps

Inside Our Minds serves the Pittsburgh region through person-focused, community-based programming. Your generous donation will support the following events:

Anonymous Open Mic - a storytelling project working to build a community narrative around mental illness in Pittsburgh. Pittsburghers affected by mental illness can submit a short story, poem, or spoken word piece anonymously online. Community members can then volunteer to perform the anonymous works in front of a live audience on behalf of the anonymous storytellers.

Mental Health Cafe - a monthly community conversation on mental health and mental illness over coffee and treats. The event will focus on informal discussions and friendly peer support in a welcoming space for all.

The Mental Illness Spotlight - a podcast that fights the stigma of mental illness by featuring the stories of people with various mental health diagnoses. The podcast participants will share their experiences, discuss treatments & symptoms, take listener questions, and debunk stereotypes in order to educate community members about mental illness. Listen here.

why we're doing it

We believe that conversations about mental illness should be open and encouraged in our community, not hidden away. Inside Our Minds wants to demonstrate to our community that there is nothing scary about talking about mental illness. Come to one of our events and see for yourself! :)

Learn More About Our Programs - Anonymous Open Mic

Recently, Inside Our Minds held our third Anonymous Open Mic Night at The Glitter Box Theater in Oakland. The event is open to the community, providing free admission, snacks, and drinks.

What is Anonymous Open Mic? AOM is a storytelling project working to build a community narrative around mental illness in Pittsburgh. Modeled after a traditional open mic night, AOM provides a community space for performers and audience members to feel comfortable talking about mental illness.

How does it work? Pittsburghers affected by mental illness can submit a short story, poem, or spoken word piece anonymously online. Community members can then volunteer to perform the anonymous works in front of a live audience on behalf of the anonymous storytellers. There is also an opportunity for individuals to perform their own works on mental illness.

With your support, we can continue to hold Anonymous Open Mic nights in Pittsburgh!

Our Year One Impact

Our first year as an organization was an amazing one! We started as a small blogging project and soon (with support from our community) expanded to an organization with a huge impact. We accomplished all this with a budget of around $1,500 - imagine what we could do with $5,000!
