the project

The Kuumba: Hustling 101 project is about youth entreprenuership, youth empowerment, and sustainability. This project will mostly take place over the summer starting in June. Youth from the Hough neighborhood will learn entrepreneurship principles and about sustainabiltiy concerns in their neighborhood. During their time with the project the youth will get hands on experience with actually creating their on products to sell to to community leadrers. All the products will either be homemade or made from recycled goods. One group of  youth in particular will create flower pots from recycled materials, such as plastic bottles and jugs, they will then plot them with soil and seeds from plants that improve air quality in the home. For each plant sold, another plant will be donated to a senior citizen in the community. The other groups will then pick a nother product to sustainable product to create and sell. We will provide them with suggestions, like paper jewelry, and healthy snacks, but we will also encourage them to come up with their own and also support them in that process. The project will culminate in August after 8 weeks of preparation with a community youth driven pop-up shop and we looking are to engage 20 youth in the Hough community between the ages of 11-16.

the steps

  1.  To engage the youth during the spring at the recreation starting in March, getting to know them volunteering with them
  2. Collecting materials for them to use over the summer
  3. Connecting with local flower shops and business owners to come and participate in the project
  4. Identifying volunteers to help with the implementation during the summer
  5. Starting in late May, creating a social media campaign to get the youth interested

why we're doing it

We are doing this to give youth a safe alternative to violence and equip them with economic an social skills that they will be able to use in the future. We also want to empower them to take a stand in their community on environmental issues. There is a lot carbon emissions in the air in the Hough community. There also isn't much fresh healthy eating options in the neighborhood. This project will address both of those concerns environmentally, and provide the youth a chance at creating solutions to the problems.
