The parklet project will convert curbside parking spaces into a vibrant community space. It will convert one parallel parking space into a public seating platform and will have features such as seating and greenery to accommodate the unmet demand for public spaces while encouraging more people to be outdoors while making our downtown more vibrant and lively. The purpose of the parklet is for it to become a welcoming public gathering place. Seating will be incorporated into the design itself or made possible with tables and chairs. The parklet will have a flush transition at the sidewalk and curb to permit easy access and to avoid tripping hazards. The width of the parklet will not exceed the width of a parking lane. It will have vertical elements that make them easily visible to traffic.
The parklet will be designed by an architectural/engineering firm. The design will be approved by the Montana Department of Transportation and the City of Lewistown. Once approved, the parklet will be manufactured in accordance with the design specifications. The slope of the street and crown of the road will be incorporated into the design.
The project is an economic development tool for our community. It will encourage walking, shopping and socializing in the downtown area. It is part of the Design and Economic Vitality elements of the 4-point Main Street Program.
