the project

In the military we had dances/balls twice a year or so. These wonderfully festive events were the perfect chance to network, and also relax for an evening, while dressing to impress in our uniforms, tuxedos, or ballgowns. After the military, most of us do not have the opportunity, or reason to dress up and go out like that. We are trying to make an annual veteran's ball centered around the 4th of July, so that veterans, the LGBTQIA+ community, and Memphis can all come together to celebrate the birth of our nation, and those who work(ed) to keep our nation safe. The ball will also serve as an annual fundraiser for the brand new "Helping Battles Scholarship Program."

While there are many opportunities available to veterans today, all of those opportunities come with a heavy price tag. Many veterans are looking to return to school, or get their license in real estate, insurance, etc. Some might even be trying to get a little help to start their own business or nonprofit. Sadly though, there are not many programs out there that are willing to make it easy. Some scholarships, or programs require the veteran to be over a certain age, or have a certain credit score/income, others want veterans to sign an agreement to work for that program for x number of years. This has discouraged a lot of vets from even attempting to better themselves, or follow their dreams. Even further, many of these veterans, are excluded from nearly 100% of veteran specific programs due to their being LGBTQIA+ or that they received a "Dishonorable Discharge" due to their LGBTQIA+ status.

the steps

Once we have a minimum budget everything will be put in place (dates, etc). We have been talking to various members of the communities (LGBT, Veterans, and Memphis), and are receiving a few in-kind donations/discounts for the event, but before anything can be made solid, we need some capital.

why we're doing it

As LGBT veterans, most of us served during Don't Ask, Don't Tell, and made it through safely. We still know the hardships that are faced simply because of who we are, and have seen them happen first hand to some of our best and brightest friends. These unfortunate people are barred from all access to any type of federal aid, or funding, including business loans, school aid, healthcare benefits, and social security. While having a ball won't fix everything, it will help us raise enough money to help show some of these people that they are loved, and not alone, and that we still have their backs.

1) $1,000 for the room/location

2) $500 for local LGBT entertainment (band/dj)

*Event will be catered by a local company, as an in kind donation to the community.
