the project
Love Earth Herbal was founded in 2010, growing nutritive herbs for teas using organic methods. We are expanding our production and including vegetables, flowers and fruit. This year one of our new highlights will be blueberries. This undertaking will have to include soil remediation of new land. My husband, Donald Jones, of Occupy Yourself, is helping with the laborious task of preparing the new site. We will work to add amendments that will acidify the soil for blueberry production, as well as increasing areas for herb and vegetable growth. To complete this project with your help we will purchase new cultivation, maintenance, and storage equipment.
the steps
Preparation of over a half acre of land to adequately support mixed vegetable, herb, flower, and fruit production.
Ongoing landscaping areas around farm to include brush and debris removal, grass mowing, and flower inputs.
why we're doing it
The area where are farm resides is on the east side of Detroit (48205). While is has numerous vacant lots and abandoned homes, gardens in this area have a great impact bringing life, and improving food access. New equipment will be used to help with keeping the area free from high weeds, litter and possible hiding pests and predators. Visually appealing beds of vegetables, flowers and herbs will increaseand opportunities for neighbors to learn and explore will be encouraged.
