the project

130 East 115 Street is located in East Harlem. It is a part of a 17 building public low-income NYCHA housing development. Census numbers indicate that the population in East Harlem is younger in age than other neighborhoods in New York City.

130 East 115 Street is faced with many daily challenges that put its residents at risk for a number of health crises. 2/3 of the population of East Harlem are overweight/obese which contributes to a number of serious health issues including Heart Disease and Diabetes.

Sadly, one of the daily challenges we face is generated by us. In order to leave our building, we have to always walk past mounds of garbage and refuse. Many residents of 130 feel as if they can throw trash out of windows, deposit it in front of the building, urinate in the elevators, hallways and in stairwells. This blight on our home is further complicated by irresponsible pet owners.

the steps

In order to achieve our goal, we have to accept that the health hazards exist. We also need to explore, envision and educate ourselves so we can then implement and enjoy the change. We want to utilize many approaches to first survey our neighbors and ask for their opinion on the current situation. Once we’ve concluded that they would like a better place to live we will work to educate our neighbors about the health hazards they are contributing to and offer them a better alternative. By establishing an entrance to the building that is trash free and replaced with large potted plants and flowers our hope is to show them that pride, generated by beautification can be a benefit to of us all.

why we're doing it

The recent invasion of rats has caused a few of us to try to take action in a positive way. Working with our neighbors to change our environment we will contribute to
a better health outcome. By eliminating the garbage that is generated daily and strewn about we hope to eliminate the infestation of rats, mice and roaches. Working with pet owners we will hope to show them that responsible owners can help maintain a cleaner outdoor space. A cleaner space is a healthier space for us all.
