the project

Community gardens are a great place to learn not only about gardening with native and adapted plants but also to build relationships with your neighbors.  Mi Jardin Stop ID 5779 is a unique community garden space that the general public can access anytime.  Whether you’re waiting for the bus, riding by on your bike or simply walking by, the public is encouraged to explore the plants and help maintain them. We are collaborating with AIA Design Voice and Capital Metro to educate and support community members who are both new to and veteran community gardeners.

the steps

1. Capital Metro will prepare the site for the community planting.

2. Invite the community to participate in the planting and to learn about native and adapted landscaping.

3. Raise $1500 for the plants and materials.

4. RSVP for the event here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/mi-jardin-block-party-planting-tickets-2447...

why we're doing it

Mi Jardin will be a transit oriented pedestrian plaza that will serve as an East Austin beacon and the design is meant to celebrate the past, present and future community residents and bus stop users.  The East Austin statistical data indicates the surrounding neighborhoods contain some of the highest densities of low-income residents in the city of Austin.  The demographics of the East Riverside neighborhood range from students to working adults, many of which are low-income. The primary age range of this particular area ranges from 20 to 40 year olds. Hispanic families, African-American families, immigrants, students, and young single adults make up the majority of those who reside within this community. The pedestrian hybrid beacon located at the bus stop is the highest used by pedestrians in the city of Austin.
