Daffodils burst into bloom along entire block

the project

We are holding a series of family-friendly planting days open to all MDW residents. We will offer plants to anyone who wants to plant them in tree beds or planters that day and provide assistance with planting.

the steps

With the assistance of the Parks Department, we have selected both annuals and perennials that are appropriate for tree bed planting. We have also purchased the tools and other supplies we need.

Our first planting day was Saturday, May 14, from 11 am to 3 pm. Additional planting days will be scheduled based on plant deliveries and installation of the remaining tree guards.

why we're doing it

We are fortunate to live on a lovely block that could be a lot lovelier with some effort by the residents. Having well-maintained green spaces is a source of pride and improves everyone’s quality of life. Moreover, by opening up the tree beds and properly maintaining them, we are helping ensure the long-term health of the trees on our block.

We hope to build a community that will work together to further improve the quality of life on our street, if not our neighborhood. We also hope our work will serve as a model and inspire other blocks to undertake similar projects.

Daffodils burst into bloom along entire block

Bulbs are popping up along the block!

600 Bulbs Planted

We recently completed our Fall Bulb Blitz, with approximately 600 bulbs planted. It's only November, but we can't wait for Spring!

Fall Bulb Blitz Underway

Our Bulb Blitz kicked off today (postponed one day because of rain).  We planted five beds and plan to continue during the week and next weekend. Come join us!

Fall Bulb Blitz

Join us to plant daffodil bulbs and perhaps some perennials on Saturday, Oct. 22, from 11 am - 3 pm. Helpers of all ages are welcome.

Join us to stroll the block - Monday, July 25

We are holding a block stroll in appreciation of the donors and volunteers who have made the Miles Davis Way Beautification Project such a success. Enjoy light refreshments, chat with neighbors, and compare today's tree beds with "before" photos to see how far we have come.

When: Monday, July 25

Time: 6 pm to 8 pm

Meeting point: 50 RSD lobby

Hosts: Rob, John and Amy

Children are welcome. Please RSVP to west77block@gmail.com

THANK YOU, DONORS!

Our spring and fall planting project is fully funded! We are gratified and a bit awed by the generosity and enthusiam of our donors and volunteers. Rest assured, we are continuing to work hard to put the finishing touches on almost all of the beds and to create a beautiful, environmentally sound and community-minded block. Thank you again! -- Amy, John and Rob

Remaining guards installed

Yesterday, all but one of the remaining tree guards were installed and they are beautiful. And planting is almost completed.

It's a tree!

Through our efforts, we have succeeded in having three new trees planted on our block in the past month. Today we welcomed our newest arrival, located on RSD at 77th St.    Pictured here is our sapling at 330 W. 77th, which now has a temporary guard around it.

Two more tree beds planted

Yesterday, we planted two more tree beds and added perennials to most of the others. Here, the Olshin family lends a hand.
