For over 40 years, the space in front of the Parkside Avenue subway station in Brooklyn was barren concrete. However, with hard work and support from neighbors like you we’ve transformed the area into the Parkside Plaza, a vibrant public space created by and for our community. Since the Parkside Plaza opened in 2015, we’ve worked together to:

-Install benches, chairs and tables for residents to sit, relax and take in the neighborhood;

-Partner with Grow NYC to host a weekly farmers market, so our neighbors have access to fresh, nutritious, locally-grown food;

-Host fun, family-friendly cultural events ranging from live music and movie nights to clam bakes and a portable “reading room”, with help from other local organizations like PLG Arts and caribBEING and local artists such as Sabor & The AfroLatineers and The Michael David Band;

-Organize a community resource fair to connect our neighbors with vital services including homelessness prevention and legal assistance;

-Partner with Thrive NYC, the city's mental health initiative;

-Use plants, flowers and shrubbery to make the Plaza more welcoming, beautiful and enjoyable.

the steps

This year, we worked with local artists, organizations and merchants to host cultural events,showcase local talent, and connect our neighbors to the services they need to thrive. In 2018, we want to expand our offerings, and find new ways to celebrate the things that make our neighborhood great. Just recently, thanks to our friends at caribBEING, Flatbush was designated Little Caribbean. We envision the Parkside Plaza as a hub into this diverse neighborhood. We are planning to continue our partnership with youth focused Ifetayo Cultural Arts Academy, Thrive NYC, the pop up library Uni Project and are working on another incredible film night (and more) with our friends at caribBEING. We would love to bring more local artists and entrepreneurs onto the plaza and are open to creative ways of engaging the community.

But we can’t do it without your help. By donating, you ensure the Parkside Plaza remains a safe, fun and vibrant place where Brooklynites can connect, express themselves, find resources they need or simply enjoy the bustle of the neighborhood.

why we're doing it

The Parkside Plaza is more than just a public space. It’s a gathering place, a transit hub and a focal point of our neighborhood. It embodies the diversity, energy and creativity that make Brooklyn--and the people who live here--so special.

We believe strongly that this is a plaza by the community for the community. If anything has shown us the power of the people, it’s that a few neighbors had a vision and with the support and creativity of the community, brought it to life. We are grateful that you all shared the belief that we could create something meaningful and beautiful together.

Ultimately, the Parkside Plaza would not exist if it weren't for the individual donations from generous community members like you. We hope that you will continue to support us in expanding what the Parkside Plaza has to offer and in making sure that it is accessible and enjoyable by everyone for years to come.
