the project

The Pop-Up Park NF! series are hands-on educational events where youth are encouraged to use creativity and imagination to build, create, and play. We use mainly salvaged or secondhand materials to create playgrounds that youth build using real tools and skills taught by supervised adults. We also aim to host these events in unused or underused spaces, helping the community to envision the possibilities those spaces can hold. Kids of all ages can join in the fun and learn how to bring their ideas to life! While the kids play, there will be plenty of activities for parents and other interested adults. We are hoping to engage neighbors in coming up with ways that we, as a community, can improve our quality of life.

“This style of event is intended to engage all voices in the community, at every age,” said Lisa Tucker, Co-Chair of the Healthy Foods Healthy People Work Group. “We want to learn from residents and hear how they want to improve their community and make it a better place to live. We hope to act on those ideas in the future.”

In summer 2016, we hosted 4 pop up park events throughout the city of Niagara Falls. For 2017, we hope to partner and bring pop ups to many existing events, as well as host a celebration Pop-Up at the end of our Walk the Falls event on September 23rd!

why we're doing it

This project was designed to get youth outside, active, and using their imaginations! By having youth build their own playground, they are challenged to first, come up with an idea of something the way to play with, and second, formulate a plan to build it. Our volunteers then help to bring their vision to life.

By hosting the events in underused spaces, we also hope to help come up with innovative solutions to the possibilities for public spaces.
