the project

The Springfield Avenue Partnership - Public Art Initiative is thrilled to bring art to Springfield Avenue in 2018.

This neighborhood - which has always been a significant source of cultural energy and diversity in our community - will become home to new works of artistic expression that capture its inclusive, vibrant role in Maplewood. Exploring the theme, "Our Community... Looking Forward," the public art will encourage businesses, neighbors, residents, and visitors to reflect on that role, and to come together in a spirit of unity, and optimism for the future.

With help from the the community, and the greater Maplewood area, the vision of a revitalized Springfield Avenue is becoming a reality. We are continuing that effort with the installation of public art and we need your support!

The Springfield Avenue Partnership (SAP) announced a Request for Proposals (RFP) from mural artists who are interested in creating commissioned public art murals at 2 locations on Springfield Avenue in Maplewood, NJ and on up to a dozen publicly owned, traffic light utility boxes and we are pleased to say the responses were all very impressive.

Our selection committee comprised of creative professionals, community members and representatives from the SAP chose the finalists based on their mural proposals and the first mural was completed at 1978 Springfield Avenue and another is in process at 1883 Springfield Avenue, with expected completion by the end of May.

Artists receive an honorarium and are reimbursed for their expenses. Additonal installations depend on our ability to raise the money needed to cover these costs.

The SAP is the district management corporation of the Springfield Avenue Special Improvement District, a self-governed entity that funds itself primarily by a special tax assessment on commercial properties within the improvement district. The SAP’s vision is to create a stable, diverse, friendly commercial district that provides for the needs of the local community, draws strength from the municipal amenities on Springfield Avenue and brings new visitors into the district.

This initiative is led by a subcommittee of the Springfield Avenue Partnership, which is a 501(c)(3). Donations to support this initiative are tax deductible as allowed by law.

why we're doing it

To borrow from a succesful program in another State:

Why Public Art?

“Public art provides the challenge of new perspective… The creator confronts individuals with a new way to experience the world. He can show the world not only as it is but also as it can be. Public art empowers people with new outlook.”
