the project

Teen unemployment is at its 3rd highest rate in U.S. history according to the Employment Policies Institute. The main reasons for the teen unemployment rate is that most teens don’t know how to properly create a professional resume. This is an issue because resumes are pivotal documents for people’s lives.  Resumes are used for job hiring, college acceptance, and so much more. Without a good resume, teens are less likely to be hired for jobs and college acceptance.

This is where ResuMade was born. ResuMade is an after school workshop program that educates high school students on how to properly write professional resumes. These students will be instructed by and paired with employers and professional resume writers. By educating students on professional resume writing, teens cannot only be prepared for a first job but also for the remainder of their teenage years.

ResuMade’s impact on the community has been giving teens a high percentage chance at being hired for jobs, which will lead to a decrease in the teen unemployment rate. According to Pew Charitable Trusts, the income of people in their 20s rises 14-16% for every year that they worked as a teen. As a result of this program, teens will obtain jobs that will benefit their financial growth in their early adult years. Also, teens will have a better chance at being able to go to college just by simply adding a great resume to their applications.  By educating teens on writing resumes, teens will have better overall writing skills that will be essential throughout not only their collegiate lives, but also in the professional world as well. Every teen will be able to have their future made through ResuMade.

the steps

ResuMade was crafted through an extensive process. Prior to ResuMade being launched, I had to assure LITE Memphis that my idea was worth funding and investing time into. After receiving funding, I contacted employers and professional resume writers to assist with educating students. Another alternative that I had to seek was writing a workshop curriculum and gathering supplies for the workshops.  The final step was finding a venue for the workshops.

So far, ResuMade has worked with Workforce Investment Network, LITE Memphis, and Advance Memphis. The first workshop took place on December 6th, 2016 at Memphis Central High School. Other workshops are scheduled to take place at various high schools through 2017.
