the project

The Rockville Bike Hub’s goal is to establish a community bike shop in the Rockville, MD area serving the Montgomery County area. A goal of the organization is to provide facilities, tools and instruction to enable community members to repair and maintain their bicycles and become more self-sufficient. Initially, the Rockville Bike Hub aims to set up a “pop-up” shop at the Rockville Farmers Market at least twice a month on Saturdays. The funds raised will be used to purchase tools and other supplies to support that “pop-up” shop and also support several community programs this spring.

the steps

Once money is in hand, the first priority is to get insurance for the organization (an unfortunate necessity) and purchase tools and other equipment.

Operate as a pop-up shop at the Rockville Farmers Market starting in May 2015

Support the Tour de Cookie, a charity ride benefiting The Tree House Child Assessment Center of Montgomery County, MD on May 2, 2015.

Support the TERRIFIC kid’s community service program run by the City of Rockville in May 2015.

why we're doing it

The Rockville and Montgomery County area has a well established and vibrant bicycling community. The area supports a number of commercial bike shops catering to the needs of the enthusiast. Recreational rides at various levels are sponsored by the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA), the Potomac Pedallers and the Rockville Bike Advisory Committee (RBAC). In addition to sponsoring rides both RBAC and WABA, along with the Montgomery County Bike Advisory Group (MBAG), are advocacy groups representing bicyclist’s interests with local governments. However, there are no community bike shops or used bike stores in Montgomery County. The Rockville Bike Hub’s long-term goal is to provide facilities and instructional programs to help members of the community repair and maintain their bicycles.  The focus will be on members of the community who use a bicycle for transportation or recreation, but who may have limited disposable income to pay for repair or replacement of an existing bicycle. The Rockville Bike Hub will also focus on underserved groups in the bicycling community such as women and minorities, who may often feel that shops who cater to bicycling enthusiasts are indifferent to their bicycling interests or concerns. RBH will encourage all bicyclists in the community with an interest in, or need of, bicycle repair and maintenance to participate in its activities.

Thank you to all the people who have donated so far. You're awesome!! And thanks for continuing to spread the word about our campaign. Bikes are getting cleaned up for the TERRIFIC kids program, and Performance Bikes in Rockville donated parts for Tour de Cookie. Things are rolling nicely so far!

Preparing for May

The fund raising has been going well, and we'd like to thank our donors - the spokes that help connect our Hub to the community. We haven't been idle over the last few weeks. Aside from all of the administrative chores and confirming the Farmers Market space, we have also been acquiring bikes for the Rockville TERRIFIC kinds community service program. We have a total of 37 bikes and have scheduled a clean up party the weekend of April 11th and 12th to get the bikes cleaned up and tuned up for the May 17th giveaway. Thanks go out to Bikes for the World, the C&O Canal Bike Loaner Program and several individual donors for donating these bikes. The latest batch of bikes has taken over Steve's workshop!
