the project

During National Minority Health Month and National Minority Cancer Awareness Week, WHYSaveALife Foundation, is launching this fundraiser to raise money to cover the cost of Umbilical Cord Blood Collection and Banking for one Mother who can't afford this life saving procedure.

WHYSaveALife Foundation, is raising money to pay for the cost of Umbilical Cord Blood Collection and Banking for a family who is not able to cover the cost.

What is Cord Blood Collections and Banking?  Cord Blood banking is the process of collecting and storing the remaining blood found within your newborns umbilical cord. Cord tissue banking is the process for collecting and storing the tissue of umbilical cord. The blood and tissue are source of cord blood stem cells and cord tissue stem cells that can be used to treat over 80 diseases including blood cancers.

Umbilical cord blood transplant offers a promising alternative treatment for patients with blood cancers in need of a bone marrow transplant, particularly for African Americans and other ethnic minorities who are underrepresented in the bone marrow cell transplantation registry, Be The Match.  For African Americans, it can be challenging to find a matched donor within the critical time when treatment is needed.

The cost of this procedure is not covered by health insurance despite the success of treating diseases with stem cell transplants. This is an out of pocket expense that is a financial challenge to many families delivering a baby.

WHYSaveALife Foundation, is a 501(c)3 non-for-profit organization determined to increase the five-year survival rate for minorities diagnosed with cancer.

WHYSaveALife Foundation’s Mission is to register 100,000 minorities to the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP).  Not only do we want to support the registry, we are pursuing legislation in the state of New Jersey to cover the cost of Umbilical Cord Blood Collection and Banking to mothers and families who can’t afford the costs.

WHYSaveALife Foundation is launching their first fundraiser to help a mother protect her children’s future.
