the project

Earth Day Initiative is a non-profit in New York City offering a variety of programs to make it as easy as possible for people to make a real world green impact.  Our Do Just 1 Thing campaign was designed with the mission to provide people with simple solutions to take the sustainability of their communities into their own hands.  A large way we keep our communities engaged is through our work with New York City schools, community organizations, and offices.

We see that once people take the first step to go green, they are often looking for additional things they can do to green their lives.  We see a lot of demand for a quick overview or top 10 list of ways that people can green their offices, their classrooms, or their homes.

We want to create a “The Simple Guide to Go Green” program to provide individuals looking to green their community with a thorough, step-by-step rundown of the low-hanging fruit they could tackle in their own homes or facilities to make them more sustainable.  This resource will be open to New York teachers, employers, and families, and give them an outline of greener practices they can integrate into their classrooms, offices, and homes. The program will consist of a guide and assistance from our own staff to hold people's hand through the process of going green, providing helpful tips for engaging the right stakeholders and constituencies to get things going in their own communities.

the steps

Research:  We will begin by looking to the expertise of a wide range of sustainability organizations to identify the low-hanging fruit in people's homes, offices, and schools where people can easily switch over to clean energy.  This is the approach we took when we first launched the Do Just 1 Thing campaign to identify one thing at the intersection of impact and convenience.  This will expand on that work to identify a sort of top 10 list of items.

Design:  We will then take this information and turn it into an easy-to-use and engaging guide that teachers, businesses, and families can use themselves.

Distribution:  We will then work through our existing networks to distribute the guide as we also reach out to new avenues that will more heavily focus on online outreach than we have done in the past.

Engagement:  We will work closely with teachers, businesses, and families that want to use the toolkit to hold their hands through the process of tackling the action items in the guide.

why we're doing it

Trying to determine how to make a positive impact on the environment in your own life is an intimidating task and most people aren't sure where to start. We're looking to solve that problem by giving individuals in our communities the easy answers. If everyone made one change in their life, be it in the office, school, or home, our impact would be huge. Our step-by-step guide will hold the hands of our communities while they take on the task of making the first changes in their life to "go green." Our changes aren't drastic or unaffordable, but instead something you can conveniently do to reduce your carbon footprint.

To do this, we are looking for funding to pay for graphic design, consultation fees, and distribution costs. We will also need to pay for the time involved with guiding individuals in their offices, schools, and homes on how to "go green."
