the project

The “Straight Farm Whitehaven” Agronomics Project is a prospective year-round, homesteading-based, experiential learning strategy, which will be implemented in the Whitehaven nieghborhood. The project will offer “hands-on” programs that impart self-sustaining living concepts to residents who are self-determined and interested in healthier lifestyles, financial savings, and gaining a sense of independence through agriculture.

Initially, entrants (residents) who enroll into the “Straight Farm Whitehaven” Agronomics Project will be able to choose a model which is their main focus.  The integrated models of agro-skills that will be offered are Subsistent Farming (farming in which the farmer’s focus is growing enough food to feed themselves and their families), food preservation (pressure canning and water bath canning), and small scale production of textiles, clothing and craftwork (sewing, quilting, crocheting, and small scale woodworking). The aforementioned concepts will be presented quarterly which will permit participants (residents) to gain competence in their chosen agriculture skill (agro-skill).  This plan is also designed for participants to work together in hopes of building solidarity and becoming “agropreneurs” (entrepreneurs who use agriculture to build a business).  In addition to gaining a new knowledge in the homesteading disciplines, the upcoming agropreneurs will also be educated in ecommerce.  Through ecommerce, participants will create and manage their own online business/businesses (with our guidance) or have the option to sell goods via “Straight Farm Whitehaven” online market.  In conclusion, the key components of this mission is to progress Whitehaven’s local economy, promote positive economic transformation through sustainable agriculture and form resilient relationships and partnerships within the Whitehaven municipal.

The intended outcomes for this project is to apprentice residents per 3 - 6 months in their preferred agro-skill and acquire expertise in agriculture, sustenance, and conservation.

They will learn the components of homesteading, health & nutrition, and e-commerce competency.  With the assistance of six individuals and prospective partnerships, new learned behaviors will develop.  Economics is an integral part in restoring our community and is often targeted for change due to its direct connection to finances and power. It is probable that this development can empower our community to have a position in 2018’s e-commerce landscape.

“E-commerce Black Friday sales hit $3.34 billion, which was represented a 21.6% year-over-year growth…” (FORBES).

Not to mention that 600,000 people a year come to see Graceland, which is located in Whitehaven.  Considering these numbers, “Straight Farm Whitehaven” products can offer tourists “front door” goods that are grown, produced, and made in Whitehaven, hence the name – Straight Farm Whitehaven.

the steps

The vital activities in this project are: securing funding for this project, procuring instructors and volunteers, organizing dates and times for homesteading modules and curriculum, securing location/s, procuring equipment and supplies, promoting the project’s mission and engaging residents to contribute and participate.  The estimated time for completing this project (if totally funded) is February 2017.

Beginning October 1, 2017, interviews will be conducted to procure project instructors and volunteers.  October 18, 2017 will be our first orientation for instructors and volunteers and meeting with prospective partners.  November 3, 2017 through January 12, 2017 will kick – off community engaging to promote project’s mission.  January 15, 2017, will mark community service and engaging, to accept interested program participants.

why we're doing it

The “Straight Farm Whitehaven” Agronomics Project addresses several needs within our community.  It will combat low income levels, aid in eliminating health disparities, and bridge gaps between Whitehaven’s well established and low income populace.  According to NeighborhoodScout, “The neighbors in the Whitehaven neighborhood in Memphis are low income, making it among the lowest income neighborhoods in America.  NeighborhoodScout’s research shows that this neighborhood has an income lower than 90.5% of U.S. neighborhoods…”  With funding, “The Straight Farm Whitehaven” concept will become a tangible social enterprise.  Participants will be able to boost their own incomes by selling fresh produce, fresh edibles, and hand – made textiles via e-commerce and local farmer’s markets.

Following, farming classes will serve as a platform to introduce health and wellness which can reverse unhealthy behavior/s that perpetuate health inequalities in Whitehaven.  Through subsistent farming, participants will learn the importance of organic (chemical free) produce, how to grow their own fruits, nuts and vegetables and how to transform themselves and their neighborhood through the intersection of local agriculture within our region.  “If Memphis is the belt for diabetes, Whitehaven is the buckle.”- Dr. Jaye Robinson, Former CEO of Methodist South (High Ground News, 2016).

Our Whitehaven neighborhood, has some outstanding things about its appeal and its way of life that are worth highlighting.  This proposal will create a course of action for residents to become involved and achieve organization.  I am best suited to carry out this mission because I truly care about my community in which I have resided for 36 years.  I am a farmer with experience in urban, community and rural farming, a former Food Educator with UT Extension Services, a local 4H Unit Leader, UT Shooting Sports Firearm Instructor (Archery), Co-founder and Coordinator of the Whitehaven Community Garden and currently the Agriculture Conservation Project Lead at a nearby church.
