the project

Rachel’s Table’s Backpack Program provides children in need with backpacks of food to sustain them over the weekend. Food items are shelf-stable and as nutritious as possible to nourish these children while also recognizing that they might not have access to refrigeration, microwaves, or can openers. This program allows children access to healthy food they might otherwise not have over the weekend when they are not receiving school breakfast and lunch. The use of backpacks to carry the food gives these children the dignity of being able to be anonymous and not clearly marked as recipients of charity. Respecting the dignity of others while helping those in need is an important Jewish value. The teens of Temple Beth El have chosen to take on this project and support it through fundraising, increasing awareness and volunteering, and soliciting and preparing physical donations of food items.

the steps

We will collect food items that meet the requirements of this program through a collection point at Temple Beth El, in addition to soliciting financial contributions.

After the collection period ends, funds raised will go directly to Rachel's Table to support the Backpack Program, and physical donations will be assembled into backpacks for distribution by Rachel's Table through the Backpack Program.

Suggested Levels of Donation:

$1- Pledge your support for the fight against hunger, and stay connected to our campaign! We will keep in touch about our progress and impact.

$10- Feed one hungry child for a weekend! Your donation will purchase enough healthy food items to fill one backpack. As a thank you, you will receive a personal email from one of the teens involved in this program. We will also keep in touch about our progress and impact.

$50- Feed five hungry children for a weekend! Your donation will purchase enough healthy food items to fill five backpacks. As a thank you, you will receive a handwritten note (for donors in the US) or a personal email from one of the teens involved in this program. We will also keep in touch about our progress and impact.

$100- Feed ten hungry children for a weekend! Your donation will purchase enough healthy food items to fill ten backpacks. As a thank you, you will be listed as a donor for Rachel's Table's Outrun Hunger benefit, and receive a handwritten note (for donors in the US) or a personal email from one of the teens involved in this program. We will also keep in touch about our progress and impact.

$180- In honor of "chai" (life), the number 18 in Hebrew, feed eighteen hungry children for a weekend! Your donation will purchase enough healthy food items to fill eighteen backpacks. As a thank you, you will be listed as a donor for Rachel's Table's Outrun Hunger benefit, and receive a handwritten note (for donors in the US) or a personal email from one of the teens involved in this program. We will also keep in touch about our progress and impact.

why we're doing it

This is important to our community, because hunger is an underlying issue that impacts us in many ways. As teens who are involved in social action and tikun olam (repairing the world), we understand how fortunate we are to have access to plentiful, healthy food. We recognize that there are many children in our community who are not as fortunate, and because hunger can be the cause of many problems, including difficulty concentration and being successful in school, we want to help make a difference.

Will you join us in fighting childhood hunger in our neighborhood?

budget

We estimate the cost of each backpack of food (cost of backpack not included) at approximately $10. One of the most meaningful numbers in Judaism is 18, which represents “life.” For $990, we would be able to prepare backpacks to feed 99 children, or 55 x 18, which is about half of the children currently participating in this program each week.

Backpacks for 99 children ($10 each) = $990

Subtotal = $990

ioby Platform Fee waived

ioby Donation Processing Fee (3%) $30

Total to raise = $1,020
