the project
The Eric Dutt Eco Center needs a wall enclosure to keep the turtles in and the little ones out! The enclosure needs to be made from clear tempered glass and is about 16 inches high and 40 feet in length. A structural aluminum base is also required.
the steps
- Contract with the installer
- Build the turtle wall!
why we're doing it
The turtle pond at the Eric Dutt Eco Center was a dream of former science teacher Eric Dutt. While the wall is functional for keeping the turtles inside and the little ones outside, it will be much more than a pond. In the pond will be fish, crayfish, and aquatic plants. The turtles we will be getting are "rescue" turtles and with this wall, they will be able to walk around the entire enclosure. It will ultimately be an aquatic ecosystem and will be used for educational purposes for all grades, K-5. PS 6 was recently listed as one of the top five green buildings in Manhattan and the Eco Center serves the students at the school, as well as outside schools and organizations.

Instead of a glass tempered wall, we are going with a "living wall" that will include stakes, high end wire fencing to match the existing fencing and a longer enclosure for the turtles besides the original one.Revised Budget, 5/23/2014
