the project

Uptown Grand Central got its start back in 2013 as the New Harlem East Merchants Association (NHEMA), when mom-and-pop shops along East 125th Street were struggling to keep their doors open and repeatedly hearing that East 125th Street was not a place to bring children, family or friends. With brooms in hand, merchants on the block between Fifth and Madison were joined by 40 volunteers from the neighborhood to hold their first-ever street clean-up.

As more merchants and community members learned of the efforts, we grew and were able to take on more ambitious projects. This included hiring formerly homeless and addicted individuals to clean the streets each weekday, beautifying the area with plantings and great street art, sponsoring holiday lights along the East 125th Street corridor, organizing street festivals, starting a farm-fresh produce market, promoting our local small businesses, and in 2015, launching our Uptown Grand Central plaza program underneath the Metro-North viaduct at 125th Street & Park Avenue. This past year, we hosted the first-ever Party On Park, two Uptown Restaurant Weeks, two Ted Smooth Old School Jams, and a street-long winter music party called the Solstice Soul Train.

In 2016, we expanded to create Uptown Grand Central, a 501c3 nonprofit that works to support, strengthen and showcase all that is "grand" about our neighborhood, from small businesses to culture to healthy living to art. Our goal is to transform the East 125th Street corridor by putting advocacy into action.

the steps

Please consider supporting in whatever way you are able: Just $25 helps sponsor one of our healthy recipe samplings, while a gift of $50 buys trash bags and gloves for one week. $100 provides an exercise class that is free for the neighborhood, $300 buys paint for more great street art, and $500 allows us to host area musicians to perform a concert. $2,000 will get you your very own street swag of holiday lights!

Donations of any amount are welcome.

PLEASE NOTE: The New York State Health Foundation will provide a DOLLAR-FOR-DOLLAR MATCH for gifts up to $1,000. So $25 becomes $50, $100 becomes $200, $500 becomes $1,000, and $1,000 becomes $2,000. Gifts above $1,000 will be matched at the $2,000 level.

why we're doing it

Lined with vacant lots and empty buildings, divided by highways and industrial zones, and plagued by high rates of homelessness and drug use, our section of East Harlem has for far too long fallen off the radar screen. With a fragmented constituency and a high influx of people that require a high rate of social services, there have been few voices standing to advocate for our community and make it a better place.

By supporting this crowdfunder, you are casting your vote for northeast Harlem -- and for making East 125th Street a healthy, vibrant place to live, work and play!
