the project

We Run Brownsville works to improve health outcomes for women by creating a safe space for women to take ownership of their well-being and cultivate advocacy and leadership through running.  It's designed to empower women to prioritize their self-care despite very real barriers of time constraints and adequate resorces.  We want to change mind sets so that women in our community would realize how important it is to look after themselves too. Women participate in an 8 week walk-to-run program that prepares them to ocmplete a competitive 5K race.

the steps

Secure indoor space - program begins in January so we will need indoor space for the winter months

Develop training plans - walk/run plans

Secure coaching staff - running coach, yoga, meditation, aerobics

Recruit new members - attend health fairs, visit local health clinics, social media

Running Gear - purchase running gear

why we're doing it

Brownsville has the largest concentration of public housing in the country and has a corresponding rate of deep, generational poverty. as a result of its high poverty rate, high incidence of diet-related disease and status as a food desert, Brownsville residents live with a high proportion of preventable chronic health conditions. There is a clear link between physical conditions and corresponding negative health outcomes. We Run Brownsville is dedicated to promoting running, walking and other physical activities for persons of all abbilities, enhancing health and fitness for all, and responding to a variety of community needs.
