Kale Chips & Other Good Healthy Snacks

the project

Young Sprouts is a food entrepreneur internship program for youth age 14-24. We operate the SeedsGROW Farm, Young Sprouts Farm Stand and Islandview Farmers Market. We are growing community by growing fresh healthy "pesticide free" food that's sold at our farm stand that pops up at the Samaritan Center and Islandview Farmers Market, and through the Grown In Detroit Collaborative stand at Eastern Market. We've operated the community-based farmers market for over eight years and it has grown from just 2 vendors to 15 with 100s of customers visiting each week. We are ready to go to the next level and we need your help to produce value added products: healthy snacks!

We, Young Sprouts, learn all about food, health, nutrition, food systems, retail marketing and merchandising and the basics of operating a business.  Youth have operated the farm, farm stand and farmers market for over 8 years and we’re ready to take our business to the next level:  producing value added healthy snacks that are affordable and made right here in the city by youth.

Our goal for 2017 is to produce three healthy snack products. Our healthy snack products will be available at our farmers market and we'll work diligently to get our products into local stores.  We are asking YOU to assist us with accomplishing our goal. We need equipment to take our business to next level. Please help us purchase a refrigerator, dehydrator and a customized tent. Togther We Can Improve Access to Good Food and Healthy Snacks!

the steps

Once we’ve raised the funds necessary to purchase the equipment we will:

  1. Thank all supporters personally and publicly.
  2. We will purchase the equipment.
  3. Engage MSU in assisting with product development.
  4. Produce a small batch for market testing
  5. Evaluate test results and refine if necessary
  6. Produce and distribute products
  7. Contact outlets to carry our products

why we're doing it

We are aiming to make tasty yet healthy snacks because that is something many young people lack. We are also aiming to provide youth with employment. When we go to the gas station or corner store it is filled with overly processed food and snacks. Too much overly processed food in a young person’s diet equates to severe chronic illnesses. Healthy snacks will help build immune systems and healthy lifestyle decisions.
