Help the Youth Tillers build 3 picnic tables and 2 benches in the Abib Newborn Community Garden in Brownsville, Brooklyn.
The Abib Newborn community gardeners are helping change the equation through their large, food-growing community garden. The Youth Tillers - a group of central Brooklyn teenagers engaged in urban agriculture internships at Green Guerillas - will help them make improvements to their garden to help them bring more people in and engage and educate young people. The Youth Tillers need lumber and supplies to construct 3 picnic tables and 2 benches to allow the Abib Newborn gardeners to hold a community barbecue on August 6th to get more people involved. They will also bring local school students into this large, food-growing community garden to learn about food and healthy living. Activities will take place 7/29 and 8/5 and Green Guerillas will provide a $100 match.
The Youth Tillers will design the benches and tables, order supplies, and hold two youth-powered community garden workdays to build the furniture and get the garden ready for the community barbecue.
Brownsville is a neighborhood that lacks open space, has few outlets for people to get fresh fruits and vegetables for their families, and needs more programs that engage youth in healthy activities that improve the environment and build community.
