the project

The Motor City Kwanzaa Kinara, the largest Kwanzaa Kinara in the world, sits in the heart of Detroit at Campus Martius every December and invites everyone to embrace, celebrate and acknowledge our beloved holiday of Kwanzaa. At our inaugural lighting in 2022, we gathered over 600 supporters in person and virtually as live performers, speakers, and the lighting of the Kinara helped us kick off the Kwanzaa season. This year, for our 2nd Annual MCKK Lighting, we are excited to introduce the 57 Families initiative.

The 57 families initiative honors the 57th anniversary of Kwanzaa by bringing the spirit of Kwanzaa directly into the home of 57 families by providing 57 Kwanzaa Kits, free of cost to the families. We believe in the power of community and the transformative impact that celebrating Kwanzaa can have and would love for you to be apart of this initiative. Our end goal is to provide Kwanzaa Kits to 57 families, fostering a sense of community, cultural awareness, and joy during the festive season by raising $8,000 by our 2nd annual MCKK Lighting on December 26, 2023.

why we're doing it

The  57 Families initiative is driven by a commitment to fostering community, promoting cultural enrichment, and ensuring that every family has the opportunity to celebrate Kwanzaa with dignity and pride. Here are the key "whys" behind this heartfelt campaign:

1. Inclusivity and Unity: Kwanzaa is a celebration of African heritage and values, emphasizing unity and community. The campaign seeks to include and unite 57 families, irrespective of their financial circumstances, allowing them to partake in the rich traditions of Kwanzaa.

2. Cultural Preservation: Kwanzaa holds deep cultural significance, with its Seven Principles (Nguzo Saba) serving as a guide for ethical and community-centered living. The campaign aims to preserve and pass on these cultural values to the next generation by providing families with Kwanzaa Kits.

3. Community Empowerment: By delivering Kwanzaa Kits, the campaign empowers families to actively engage in the celebration, fostering a sense of pride and ownership within the community. This empowerment contributes to the overall well-being and cohesion of the community.

4. Educational Opportunity: For families who may not have had the chance to explore the principles of Kwanzaa, the campaign provides an educational opportunity. The curated kits serve as a gateway for families to learn about and embrace the principles of Umoja, Kujichagulia, Ujima, Ujamaa, Nia, Kuumba, and Imani.

5. Joy and Togetherness: Kwanzaa is a time of joy, reflection, and togetherness. The campaign aims to bring smiles to the faces of 57 families, creating an atmosphere of joy and togetherness that will be remembered and cherished.

6. Addressing Economic Disparities: The campaign recognizes economic disparities that can limit access to cultural celebrations. By providing Kwanzaa Kits, it addresses these disparities, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder families from participating in the festivities.

7. Cultivating Lasting Memories: Kwanzaa is a time for creating memories that resonate through generations. The campaign strives to cultivate lasting memories for 57 families, building a foundation for cultural pride and shared experiences.

8. Celebrating the 57th Anniversary:The campaign is symbolic, aligning with the 57th anniversary of Kwanzaa. It represents a milestone in the continued celebration of Kwanzaa, emphasizing the enduring importance of this cultural observance.

In essence, the "Kwanzaa Kits for 57 Families" campaign is inspired by a deep sense of community, cultural pride, and the belief that every family, regardless of circumstance, deserves the opportunity to embrace and celebrate their heritage through the lens of Kwanzaa.
