the project

The Pakistani community has been working diligently to construct its garden as part of the larger Cleveland Cultural Garden. We have gone through the process of creating a design, getting it approved, getting building permits, and lining up contractors. We are now in the process of building phase one of our design. We have raised funds from within our community for most of the project. The cost for such an undertaking is very high and we have reached within our community for ‘in kind’ donations wherever possible. Structural materials and construction are something that only moves forward with cold hard cash. This is where we are facing some obstacles.  We have moved forward with the construction by laying the foundation for the structure and filling in the green space.

Phase one of our garden consists of a raised circular stage that is highlighted by a white star (reflecting our flag) that is surrounded by a textured green background (giving an ode to Pakistan’s wonderful fertile soil.)  Around this circular structure, there will be several informational plaques with general information and QR codes that will allow for more in-depth learning.  Towards the south of this magnificent structure is a small walkway with flower beds and some benches and seating. This will offer a place to sit and reflect upon some of the things just learned from visiting this outdoor museum.

Towards the north is a small amphitheater for some informal seating. We plan on having some programming at this garden that will be enhanced by its natural beauty and the multiculturalism that is all around. We plan on having some classical music and poetry performances making use of the amphitheater. We are planning on hosting some art exhibits with some hands-on learning projects. We already have drum lessons and a great ‘Pakistani truck-art’ learning station at One World Day. We hope to expand upon past experience and look into new options to explore… When all this falls into place, this will be a great venue for people of all cultures to learn about Pakistan and all it has to offer to a very diverse Cleveland society.

the steps

We plan on planting trees where they will grow and provide shade to our visitors in years to come.

The circular center stage containing the star on a bed of green is an integral part of the structure.

Informative Plaques to help with the learning experience

The amphitheater will go in next.

Flowers in the beds do complete the visitors experience.

why we're doing it

The Pakistani community has been working for the last 5 years to create a cultural garden, an outdoor museum, that teaches the citizens of Northeast Ohio the history and culture of Pakistan. We have designed a wonderful structure, accented by informational plaques, that reflect the historical impact we have had on the cultural and intellectual advancement of civilization. We feel that we have received some bad press and therefore are often misunderstood by the general public.  We need to rectify the misinformation that is out there, and offer up our narrative.

We are working with the larger Cleveland Cultural Gardens community to offer up the diversity that is present in our beautiful city. We are using the wisdom acquired by this 100-year-old institution to bridge the pathways of diversity and increase mutual understanding with the sharing of cultures.  We feel this investment in the creation of our outdoor museum is actually an investment in Clevelanders. This exposure to Pakistani culture is offering them an opportunity to experience things that they otherwise would never see. We hope this will work to negate some of the harm to our image that has been done by the media.   With experiences that Clevelanders have after visiting our Cultural Garden they will go forward with a fresh look towards their Pakistani friends, neighbors, and colleagues.
