the project

The 462 Halsey Community Garden is a fairly new group working together to transform a vacant lot in bed stuy into a thriving, self sustaining community hub.  Our goal is to bring the residents of bed stuy together through agriculture, healthy living and community responsibility.

We would like to build a greenhouse that will serve as a seedling starter.  It will also be used to keep our garden plants going through the winter.  The chicken coop will house our chickens so we can harvest eggs and will also serve to heat the greenhouse, harnessing the body heat of chickens.

We have over 20 residents who will be directly involved in the building of the project, as well as the Brooklyn Permaculture group.

Our hoped for outcome is that we are able to build these structures that will greatly enhance the utility of our garden.

the steps

The first step is to acquire the funding, after that we need to:

  • collect the building materials
  • collect the tools
  • assemble the team for a weekend
  • build the structures
  • add plants and chickens and its a success!!!!

why we're doing it

We are looking to build the greenhouse and chicken coop no later than the end of January.  Ideally, we only need one or two weekends.  We would like to start after the Holidays, Jan 14/15 and Jan 21/22 would be the 2 weekends we would use.
